May 23, 2007 – Rotary Notes

From the Top:

As announced last week, the board met this Tuesday morning rather than the Tuesday after Memorial Day.  I'll give you a brief summary of some of the items discussed.

First, Koy has moved in with her last host family.  As a Senior, she completed her class work at DHS last Friday.  Remember to keep her in mind when making plans for day trips as she has some time to fill.  Koy is at the home of Jan and Carina Sennov (their daughter Kimmie was a friend of Gesa). They can be reached at 424-1769.

As you know, the Club has had a desire to get back into the heart of the village since we left the Tuscan House a few years ago.  John announced a couple weeks ago that we will be moving to Terry B's beginning in June.  The board discussed this move on Tuesday and made it official.  We will meet at Terry B's beginning with the June 7th meeting.  I want to thank Dexter Schools for hosting us the last couple years and encourage each of you to thank the staff who has helped us over that time.

President's Night is scheduled for June 28th at Gordon Hall.  The committee will have more information this Thursday morning.

I have mentioned Relay for Life in the past.  This is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society in the form of a 24 hour relay.  I will have the sign up sheet Thursday morning to test the level of interest in forming a team to participate in this event.  The ACS committee has done a good job in the inaugural Dexter Relay.  It would be good exposure for the Club if we could get a team formed.

Thanks,
--Fred

PS—There is a lot going on in our club! Please take the time to read through all the announcements.

Soccer This Thursday:

Pat Conlin throws down the gauntlet:

I am formalizing the Rotary Chelsea/Dexter challenge for the Chexter or Delsea Cup (bowling pin). The Women's high school JV soccer teams are playing on Thursday May 24 at 5:30 p.m. in Dexter. The location of the game is Creekside Intermediate School, 2615 Baker Road. I believe this is the old high school field.

The deal is this: It is a potluck supper. I propose that the Chelsea members bring main dishes (after all, we meet at the Common Grill and the Dexter club meets at a grade school cafeteria...) and the Dexter members bring drinks, sides, chips and/or dessert. I would plan on feeding 20 to 30 Rotarians and maybe a few soccer players from both teams as well. Could be a good recruiting event!

Both clubs should bring their club banner/flag to put up at the field.

Please remember that this is a great event to support Luisa and Koy, our respective exchange students. You have ALL heard how wonderful they are and this is a nice way to make them feel that the clubs support them...

The competition is as follows:

For the Chexter or Delsea Cup (bowling pin) -- combine score of both JV games (Dexter won the last match up 1-0) plus the number of Rotarians, Rotarian spouses and Rotarian kids at the event. I'm warming up to bring my family of 5, count'em 5, Dexter... The club with the highest total gets the trophy.

I would ask that each club provide five small gifts/gift certificates from businesses or hobbies. These can be raffled off at the event to raise a little money for a joint charitable gift. If you have a cool thing you can donate or a small ($5 or $10) gift certificate from your business, bring it and we can raffle them off.

I am sorry that I have been slow in finalizing the details, but we are all busy and SO ARE OUR EXCHANGE STUDENTS, but we can make time for some fun and fellowship to support them!

I am emailing Lori Sprague in Dexter with the hope she can pass along to the club next door...someone at Dexter needs to get a couple folding tables to have at the game.

Thanks in advance for your support!

Pat

Rotate Your Food:

This year’s drive is scheduled for June 4-16. We will be receiving collection containers next week. Many thanks to Brian Falzon who has once again volunteered to consolidate all the donations at the end of the drive—he will need some strong backs to help him on June 16. You can show your support by bringing non-perishable food items to our meetings on June 7 and 14 or dropping them off at one of the donation sites.

A buffet dinner will be served at 7:30 and the evening will conclude with a brief program celebrating the successes of the past year.

The menu will consist of two meat choices, a vegetarian pasta, several side dishes and a delicious Stucchi’s ice cream cake. Wine and non-alcoholic beverages will also be provided.
