February 27, 2007 – Rotary Notes

From the Top:
/bigger>
/fontfamily>Paul Cousins is our official
Membership chairperson. This does not mean it is his
job alone. We are all responsible for attracting new
members. Sometimes we get lucky and prospective
members find us as we found out last week. Jennifer
(whose last name escapes me) joined us for the first
time and expressed her interest in joining Rotary.
Jennifer had heard about Rotary from a friend in
Atlanta and sought out the club in her area. If
gaining new members was this easy we would be a
large club by now. Do as Jennifer's friend did and
tell your friends about Rotary.
I finally found the note that I received from a
friend about the Relay for Life of Dexter. Relay for
Life is a 24 hour relay that the American Cancer
Society conducts in a location as a fund raiser. We
discussed it at last week's board meeting and
thought it might be a good opportunity for community
exposure for the club. The informational meeting is
March 15th from 7-8 pm at the Dexter Senior Center.
My wife Cathy is a cancer survivor and I will be at
the meeting to gather information to share not only
with my fellow Rotarians but as many people as I can
in the community. Please join me if you wish. I'll
have copies of the invitation with me.
Thanks,
--Fred

Ambassadorial Scholarships Announced:/fontfamily> /fontfamily>
/x-tad-bigger>/fontfamily>The following press
release has been sent out to the Dexter
Leader/Chelsea Standard as our first effort
publicizing RI programs jointly between our two
local clubs. Meanwhile, please pass this information
on to any qualified candidates you may know. They
will thank you forever.
PRESS RELEASE
The Rotary Clubs of Dexter and Chelsea are currently
inviting applicants for Rotary International's
prestigious Ambassadorial Scholar program. The
scholarship, worth over $20,000, will be awarded for
graduate study abroad in the 2008-09 academic year.
Applicants should have a connection with the
Dexter/Chelsea community. Applications must be
submitted to either the Dexter or Chelsea Rotary
Club by May 1, 2007. The contact for the Dexter
Rotary Club is Lori Sprague, 426-0193. For the
Chelsea Rotary Club, contact Jerry Wilczynski at
475-4111.
The purpose of the Ambassadorial Scholarships
program is to further international understanding
and friendly relations among people of different
countries. While abroad, scholars serve as
ambassadors of goodwill to the people of the host
country and give presentations about their homelands
to Rotary clubs and other groups. Upon returning
home, scholars share with Rotarians and others the
experiences that led to greater understanding of
their host countries.
The Ambassadorial Scholarships is the Rotary
Foundation's oldest and best-known program. Since
1947 nearly 37,000 men and women from 100 nations
have studied abroad under its auspices. Today it is
the world's largest privately funded international
scholarships program. Nearly 800 scholarships were
awarded for study in 2005-06. Through grants
totaling approximately US$500 million, recipients
from some 70 countries studied in more than 70
nations.

Group Study Exchange:/bigger> /bigger>
/bigger>
/x-tad-bigger>/fontfamily>Here is a note from
Spaulding Clark from the Ann Arbor Club regarding
plans for the Group Study Exchange with Thailand.
This is a district-wide effort so please feel free
to jump in and help. Remember, one of our own
members, Patty McCarthy, began her Rotary career as
a GSE team member.
During the month of April, five members of a Group
Study Exchange from Thailand will be visiting
District 638. They will be hosted during this time
by various clubs within the district, and the Ann
Arbor Club will be responsible for three days
beginning Tuesday the 24th to Friday the 27th. They
will be picked up from the Lakes Area club on
Tuesday, and then driven to the District Conference
in Lansing on Friday.
For the three nights that they will be staying with
us, we will need host families. We will also need
some drivers to transport the visitors to and from
the activities which will be planned during their
stay. At this point it time, their schedule has not
been planned.
Thus, if you are willing to either host a visitor,
provide transportation, or have any suggestions for
events during our visitors brief stay, please let
either myself or Bill Dunifon know. Our contact
information is below. In order to provide additional
